While embarking on our quest for non-toxic products, we stumbled across several questionable ingredients that were found in so-called “green” and “natural” products. Upon researching, we discovered that while the following ingredients may be concerning for different reasons, the concern is relative to the amount of chemical included in the product, the specific product it is used in and the form of the chemical used.

In general we will do our best to avoid these products, however, understanding the limitations of scientific research  and engineering, we will make exceptions, which we’ll let you know about upon purchasing.

Things we’re wary of:

Titanium Dioxide (used in most makeup products; we allow it in eye and face products but will stay away from them for lip products)

Sodium Benzoate (a preservative that rates a 3 on the EWG, and can be found in some cleaning products.)

Potassium Sorbate  (a preservative that rates a 3 on the EWG, and can be found in some cleaning products.)

Cocamidopropyl Betaine (a synthetic surfactant; it has been associated with irritation and allergic contact dermatitis, reactions that could be due to the ingredient itself or to impurities present in it, such as 3-dimethylaminopropylamine.)

Phenoxyethanol (see our post)

Benzisothiazolinone (an antimicrobial preservative with limited data of its hazards, but the concerns are irritation and allergies when inhaled or put directly on skin. May be included in cleaning products we sell. Just ask).

Alcohols (not toxic, but drying and irritating.)
