Summer Skincare Switches

Just like our diets and wardrobes change with the season,

our skincare must, too.

Here’s a couple of easy switches to ensure #iwokeuplikethis skin all summa long.

Switch to a Water-Based Cleanser

During summer, we typically sweat more, which opens up our pores.

This is great for skin detoxification if you’re washing your face immediately. If not, you could inadvertently be allowing for more dirt and grime build up, which can lead to pimples. Sun exposure and sunscreen also play a role in acne flare-ups over the summer. Cleansing is vital in preventing and minimizing these skin troubles.

Typically, we’re huge fans of oil cleansers. They are the cleanest and safest products as they require no preservation system, and they work well for makeup removal and simultaneous hydration support. But for summer, we suggest switching to a water-based cleanser instead. Cleansers like gels or foams help control oil production that could increase with the summer’s heat. So, we suggest saving the oil cleansing for those heavy, makeup-filled nights!

Up Your Toner Game
Toner is a MUST, all-year round (see blog post here). But in the summer, its benefits are even more apropo. Toner closes up the pores, helping to block out pollutants and grime. It’s a coolant, too, which will bring down your skin temp on those scorcher days. Wipe down with a cotton ball after exercise, spritz yourself on the beach, or in between errands. You’ll feel awesome and help shield your skin from dirty air.

I don’t want to belabor this one- you’d have to be dead not to know how important Broad Spectrum sun protection is. MINERAL protection, of course! We’ve spoken about the differences between chemical and mineral sunscreens a couple times before. In short: chemical sunscreens are damaging to your skin, body, and environment. (read more about it HERE!) We’ll stick with the pasty white zinc, please. Here’s a tip: choose a sunscreen you’ll actually WEAR.

We feel you, Jim.

If it needs to be a spray, grab our awesome Babo Botanicals zinc spray. If you need to use a little elbow grease to buff that creamy stuff in, DO IT. If you’re smart and want to make your life easy, you’ll pick up our Suntegrity 5-in-1 Tinted Moisturizer, which makes you look flawless and protects you at the same time.

But remember- sun protection shouldn’t be left for topical products alone. Sunglasses, hats, and limiting exposure are important ways to stay safe during the sun’s peak hours. All this being said, don’t forget that some early morning or late afternoon minutes in the sun, unprotected, are essential for Vitamin D intake, too. Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.

Adjust Your Moisturizer
Again, summer is a time to watch your oil application. Evaluate your moisturizers and figure out where to lighten up. You’ll also be layering your moisturizer with a sunscreen, so you want to make sure your products don’t overwhelm your skin. Depending on your skin type and its unique personality, you may still need to keep some oil in your routine, possibly for the day, but especially at night. On the other hand, you may want to skip a raw oil completely. A light, creamy moisturizer should do the trick for most people. We have a great, affordable one by White and Elm, a sea-water based cream by Beauty Shamans, or a more expensive option (with SPF in it!) by Josh Rosebrook. Moisturizers with citrus oils, algae, and aloe are perfect for hotter weather. Pay attention to how your skin feels after you finish your daily skin prep, and adjust accordingly.

Hope this was helpful. More comin’ at you very soon…
